Direct Advertising

Direct advertising programs will often take familiar forms- Classifieds, Bulletin Boards, etc. Many are free to use, some will pay for themselves over time, some  will even earn you some extra cash if you like. Just like off line advertising, the effectiveness can vary widely, but unlike offline ads you have much more control of (and responsibility for) that effectiveness.

Text-Link-Ads

This is a great program! You can purchase or host ads for a 30 day period. Advertisers can choose the sites they advertise on, and Publishers have the right to approve or disapprove ads placed on their sites. Prices are set according to the website's traffic, theme, link popularity, and the position of the ad. Ads are priced at a flat rate for the 30 days- no worries about outspending your budget or having your ad turned off because it gets too many clicks. And Text Link Ads staff are on hand to help you decide what sites will be best for placing your ad without breaking your budget. Ads are not contextual, so there is no conflict with AdSense- they can appear on the same page without fear of reprisal from Google. Best of all, Text Link Ads are static html so they can be seen by the search engine bots and help your link popularity immensely. Link popularity and relevance have become the top factors in organic search engine ranking, so these ads will actually help your page rank score. Google AdWords

Google's AdWords program is the most famous of the pay per click programs and the 800 lb. gorilla on the advertising block. As a matter of fact, it's almost impossible to find a website of any size that doesn't host AdWords ads anymore. It's an excellent idea- far superior to the alternative at the time when it first started. You see, before AdWords advertisers paid per impression. Every time your ad was shown on a web page, you were charged regardless of whether anyone ever visited your site or not. With Pay Per Click ads you only pay for actual visitors to your site, making them more effective by far. On top of that, Google has been honing their algorithms so that the ads displayed on a website reflect the content of the website- hence the term contextual ads. Thus a properly written AdWords ad with well chosen key word should bring highly qualified visitors to your site who are ready to buy. Prices are set by advertisers bidding on the various key words and phrases. In addition Google has instituted a system that will actually help keep you from going over your budget. There is a definite strategy to placing your AdWords ads, and you should spend some time choosing your keywords and ad placement. Several books have been written on the subject in addition to the help you can get from Google. For a look at some of the better books, visit Recommended EBooks, or click here.

This is one of our absolute favorites. Earn credits toward your own advertising doing what you're doing right now- viewing websites. Instant Buzz is an unobtrusive little bar that sits at the top of your browser and displays other people's text ads. Every time you view a new webpage you get credit towards posting your ads for other people to see. That's it. This creates a very high conversion rate, since people who click on your ad are already interested. Some people are reporting clickthroughs as high as 25%. InstantBuzz is very well behaved and easy to use and set up. It is also by invitation only. so rather than giving you a link here you will have to request an invitation by e-mail. Click here to request your invitation.

AdProfits4U

This is an entirely new program that is growing very fast (and gaining readership for your ads). The basic concept is that people are paid for reading ads. Your ad is placed in rotation, and members must read a certain number of ads every day and then take a quick and easy test to prove that they have read the ads. If you purchase advertising you only need to read one ad per day (and can store up ahead of time in case you go on vacation). Subsidized (free) members must read 5 ads per day. Everyone receives shares in the program for staying active in various ways (reading ads, referring others, etc.). The more shares you have, the more you get paid (and the more ads you are allowed to place in rotation).

OBOAds

A traditional classified type site that allows you to place virtually any ad for free. Get featured status for a very small fee. Webmasters love to host these ads because by being part of the syndicate it helps raise their ranking in the search engines. If you own your own site, you should join the network and host ads on your site as well. the box below is an example of what the ads can look like.

Quickonnex

AdsOnQ uses a great new RSS technology written by the folks at Quickonnex. Rather than pushing information to you that you don't necessarily want, it allows you to subscribe to the feeds that interest you. New posts are then sent to the channels you have subscribed to and are there waiting for you to read if and when you are ready. They have an excellent RSS reader called QuickView that docks in a sidebar right in your browser and allows you to read your feeds when you want.
