How To Make Money Online With Google Analytics

In this post I am going to show you a very easy way to make money online by squeezing a few extra dollars out of your blog simply by observing your traffic patterns using Google Analytics. I am about to leave to Texas very early Tuesday morning, so I figured I would write a quick post offering you some tips. Usually I put more planning into my articles, but I am very busy. Ironically, a lot of you guys and gals tell me that these style of posts are usually my best.

The reason why I wrote this post is because this is the exact same thing I was doing this morning. Long story short, my blog has been online for a few years, it has a PageRank 5, and I never really do anything to piss off the Google Gods. All in all, this is a very healthy blog. With that said, even though I have a lot of RSS subscribers, the amount of traffic I have from regular readers only puts a dent compared to my overall traffic flow on the blog.

On a typical day, my blog receives about 65% to 80% of its traffic from search engines. Depending on what I write from time to time and how bad I piss people off, these numbers do vary. But overall, this has been the average for quite some time. Having said that, I try to make as much of an effort as possible to see where within search engines my traffic is coming from (I.E. which keywords and keyword phrases).

When I observe my traffic patterns and discover which blog posts are getting hit hard by search engine traffic and which keywords people are typing into the search bar to find them, I’ll go back to my post and attempt to edit the post in a way that enables me to improve a call to action. That call to action can be something such as editing the content slightly to promote either an affiliate based product or one of my own. Or, it can be as simple as putting up my mailing list opt in form manually. Take a quick look at this screen shot:

If you take note of #12 on the list, this is a post titled, . I wrote the post on Nov. 2nd, 2008. This was long before created and launched their amazing product, . At the time when I wrote the post, I was promoting and selling a premium article that I wrote. I was (still available - check sidebar) selling this article for $1.00 per download. Instead, this morning I decided to review the article content to promote and sell Affiliate Theme because of the ratio I have for success.

In other words, I would have to sell about 90 copies of my $1.00 to every 1 sale of Affiliate Theme. Based off my report, this isn’t happening. On average I have been selling about 25 copies per month. This means, that if this page can successfully generate at least ONE sale of Affiliate Theme, I will make about $65 dollars more per month that this page has been earning prior to the update. Now with that said, take a look at this screen shot:

Now, one of the greatest features with Google Analytics, is that it gives you the ability to see what keywords and keyword phrases people use to find your content in search engines. As you can see from the screen shot above, my page is seated pretty well with some really good keywords. Quite honestly, this page is getting hit heavy with over 500 various keywords and keyword phrases.

Now, I already mentioned that I was pretty busy and I am about to leave to Texas. I have already revised this page to promote Affiliate Theme. When I get back to the office, one of the things I am going to do is revise this page once more. If I had more time today, I would do all this the proper way, which would be to do only one edit. Ideally, it would be best, but I don’t have time.

The final step to success is to edit your content making sure that you include the keywords and keyword phrases being reported on your Google Analytics report. If you fail to do this then eventually when the Googlebot comes back to recrawl your page you will lose your keyword rankings because the keywords and keyword phrases are no longer found in your article content. Also, one more thing to note is that if you see keywords and phrases lower on your list that look hot, optimize your article content to target them more heavily.

With that said, I hope you enjoy this tip, I am off to Texas and I will talk to you in a few days. Once again, I want to remind you that if you have questions that you would like to ask me, you can visit my post titled, . If your question is a really good one, I will use it for a future blog post. You’ll get credit for the question and if you have a blog, you’ll get to experience some traffic.

Great article Garry! I have been meaning to work on my keywords for my landing pages, just never seem to have time.

Thanks, Bryan Make $150+/day online - Free report

You always have to make time for this… but, I’ll admit, I know exactly what you mean. But interestingly enough, I have gotten to the point where it can be a challenge to figure out new things to write about. So while I could continue writing new content at a fast pace, I could also slow the pace down and revisit my older content to make it better, which in return can help grow the blog even more.

Hi Garry, Great post I have been on the internet for about 4 months so far. I am a student of Alex Jefferey. I like the advise you give on using your google analytics to search the keywords being used to find my content and then to make sure to edit the content to include the keyword and keyword phases in my content. I will keep you posted on how I am doing with your advise. P.S. Have a safe trip back to Texas I am also out of town I am actually in Dresden Tenn visiting my 9 month old grand daughter.

Talk to you soon John.

Hi John,

Excellent to hear from you. I wish you a great time with your family.

Great article Garry,

There are a few posts that I am planning to re edit once this new affiliate program starts.

What I do as well is I’ll check to see which of my posts are getting the most traffic from search engines and then display adsense ads only on those posts. Since I started doing that my overall CTR has doubled. The funny thing is that the amount I was getting per click also increased by quite a bit too.

Anyway that’s my expereince using analytics.

Steve

Analytics is great… I don’t have much experience with many other programs, but the greatness is simply having the knowledge of what is going on with your site and then creating little plans on how to improve off the information attained.

Garry,

Currently, my Blog gets less than 20% daily traffic from Search engines. Thanks for the information…I need to concentrate more on those Keywords within my articles and improve those stats.

Gord

Hi Gord, while my stats sound all good and perfect, they are not. For a long time I have been also working on converting more of this daily search traffic into regular reader traffic. For some reason that is a goal that has much slow growth. With the last changes I have made to the blog things have been improving a lot.

Garry,

Great Post!

How careful do you have to be when going back into a existing post and changing, adding affiliate links or updating the content.

In other words, lets say I am getting 5 hits a day for the keyword red tulips free shipping.

How careful do I have to be so that I do not mess up my existing rank.

In addition, lets say I also am getting 5 hits for the keyword blue tulips. Would you create a separate page for this keyword or use the same red tulip page.

I guess the main question is what effect does updating an existing blog page have on Google rankings.

Have fun in Texas!

j

Fun stuff, Garry. I pay attention to the keywords in Google Analytics, but I’ve often wondered, especially on my other websites, if I need to install that analytics code on each of my pages to get more detailed results. I’m not quite sure if I’m getting statistics for the whole site, or just the home page.

With that said, I’ve done a little tweaking based on the info I’m getting inside Google Analytics. It’s a very helpful tool, for sure. I’m not sure I’ve had any success in making more money because of it, but only time will tell on that one. Good luck and much prosperity and abundance while in Texas.

When it comes to modifying the text, some phrases will rank because of related contect. For instance, your copy may not have the words best or simple, but because of the authority of the site, it doesn’t need to. You have Wordpress landing pages, which is enough.

Couldn’t adding related words to your tags be another way of trying to make sure Google will still recognize the site for those phrases instead of modifying the text.

I wonder if there is some danger in the modifications causing problems. For instance, if the page is designed for Adsense, great text flow may not be as important, as it would be if you are trying to convert for an affiliate product.

Again, if you add the words best and simple in various places, the article may not read as well to a person and thus conversions could drop.

Another thing I’ve heard some write about, is try to get some backlinks with some of the various long-tail phrases.

Thoughts

I’ve been doing something similar with the same results. Thankfully, I can toggle the display of ads with my software. So if a post does exceptionally well, I can turn on the ads and collect a little adsense goo. I haven’t sold any affiliate stuff on my blog blog, but this year I’ll be introducing that somehow. Just need to find something I can believe in.

I think that is a great idea, going back over pages that have been successful the first time round is a really good idea. I have never fully thought this through but you have made some really good points that with age could really help you gain rankings. I like it.

Thanx garry for the tips, and thank you for telling me via Google chat..

I’ve been doing that for a few weeks already but honestly nothing is goin good as i thought but hey! nevermind i will try my best to do what ever it takes to built a strong blog like you do here.. But somehow it really pissed me off..

Thinking about an affiliating.. I wanna choose the best product’s for my blog, maybe yes, if you visit my blog there is so much stuff of ads or publishing the products from aweber..

But none of them are working i have to take the next step!! But i still waiting for the 2nd step idea..

Thank you garry conn.. Have a nice pleasant day in TEXAS!!

Nice tips:)
